THE SKILL

What Is 1v1 Attacking?

A 1v1 attacking situation occurs when an attacker directly confronts a defender and has an opportunity to create an advantage.

The attacker may try to beat the defender, create enough separation to pass or shoot, carry into space or force the defender to commit.

Good 1v1 attacking is not simply about knowing tricks.

It requires recognizing the defender's position, controlling the ball and choosing the right action at the right moment.

KEY IDEA The goal of a 1v1 is to create an advantage, not to perform the most complicated skill move.

WHY IT MATTERS

One Beaten Defender Can Change The Attack

Defensive structures depend on players controlling specific opponents and spaces.

When an attacker beats a defender, another defender may have to leave their position to help.

That movement can create passing lanes, shooting opportunities and space for teammates.

Winning one duel can force the entire defense to react.

THE FOUNDATIONS

Four Parts Of Effective 1v1 Attacking

01

Control

Keep the ball close enough to change your action when the defender reacts.

02

Deception

Make the defender believe you may move in a different direction.

03

Separation

Create enough distance that the defender cannot immediately recover.

04

Decision

Recognize whether to dribble, carry, pass or shoot.

THE APPROACH

Attack The Defender With Purpose

The way you approach a defender influences the options available afterward.

If you approach too slowly from too far away, the defender may have time to organize their position.

If you approach completely out of control, you may not be able to change direction when the defender reacts.

Approach with enough speed to threaten the defender while maintaining enough control to respond.

DISTANCE

Do Not Make Your Move Too Early

A body feint or direction change performed while the defender is still far away may have little effect.

The defender must be close enough that your movement forces them to react.

But waiting too long can allow the defender to tackle the ball.

TIMING Get close enough to influence the defender, but keep enough space to escape.

READ THE DEFENDER

Watch Their Body Position

The defender's body gives you information about which spaces may be easier to attack.

Look at their hips, feet, balance and movement.

A defender leaning heavily toward one side may struggle to reverse direction quickly.

A defender moving backward may be vulnerable to a sudden acceleration.

A defender stepping aggressively toward you may leave space behind.

MANIPULATE MOMENTUM

Move The Defender Before You Beat Them

Beating a stationary, balanced defender can be difficult.

Instead of immediately attacking the space you want, first encourage the defender to move.

A small touch, body movement or change of pace can shift their weight.

Once their momentum moves one way, attack the opposite space.

Move the defender first. Attack the space second.

CHANGE OF SPEED

Acceleration Creates Separation

A skill move alone rarely beats a defender.

The movement creates an opening, but your acceleration takes advantage of it.

After the defender shifts or commits, use an explosive touch into the available space.

1

Approach

Carry toward the defender under control.

2

Manipulate

Make the defender shift or commit.

3

Escape

Move the ball into the available space.

4

Accelerate

Create separation before the defender recovers.

CHANGE OF DIRECTION

Threaten More Than One Route

Attackers become easier to defend when they always move toward the same side.

You should be capable of escaping both left and right.

This does not mean both sides must be equally strong.

Your weaker side only needs to be dangerous enough that the defender cannot completely ignore it.

DECEPTION

Your Body Can Move The Defender

Effective deception does not always require a complicated foot skill.

A shoulder drop, hip movement, head movement or change in stride can make the defender expect one action.

If the defender reacts, the opposite space can open.

SIMPLICITY A convincing body feint followed by acceleration can be more effective than several unnecessary tricks.

BALL PROTECTION

Protect The Ball After You Gain The Advantage

Getting slightly ahead of a defender does not automatically mean the duel is finished.

The defender may recover from the side or behind.

Once you move past them, use your body to place yourself between the defender and the football when possible.

This makes recovery more difficult and helps you maintain the advantage you created.

END PRODUCT

Beating The Defender Is Not The Final Goal

A successful 1v1 should lead to something useful.

After beating the defender, look for the next action immediately.

OPTION 01

Shoot

Attack the goal if the duel creates a shooting opportunity.

OPTION 02

Pass

Find a teammate if another defender moves toward you.

OPTION 03

Cross

Deliver into the box if the duel creates space out wide.

OPTION 04

Carry

Continue forward if useful space remains open.

DEVELOPMENT

How To Train 1v1 Attacking

Start by learning the basic movement and ball control required for the action.

Then gradually make the environment less predictable.

1

Learn

Practice the movement without pressure.

2

Add Speed

Perform the action while approaching at game-like pace.

3

Add A Defender

Begin against controlled defensive pressure.

4

Go Live

Let both attacker and defender make real decisions.

Eight Skill Guides

Work through the guides in order to build your 1v1 attacking ability from the foundations into realistic pressure and decision-making.

TRAINING PRINCIPLE

Technique Must Survive A Defender

Unopposed skill work can help you learn movements.

But eventually you need a defender who can react differently from repetition to repetition.

This forces you to read the opponent rather than simply repeat a memorized sequence.

PROGRESSION Technique → speed → decisions → pressure → live 1v1.

COMMON MISTAKES

What Makes 1v1 Attacking Ineffective?

01

Using Skills Too Far Away

The defender does not need to react to the movement.

02

Approaching Out Of Control

You cannot adjust when the defender changes position.

03

Always Attacking The Same Side

The defender can predict and block your preferred route.

04

No Acceleration

You create an opening but allow the defender to recover.

05

Watching Only The Ball

You miss the defender's movement and available space.

06

Trying To Beat Everyone

You dribble even when passing would create the better attack.

SKILL SUMMARY

Seven 1v1 Attacking Principles

01

Approach with enough speed to threaten while maintaining control.

02

Read the defender's feet, hips, balance and momentum.

03

Get close enough that your movement forces a defensive reaction.

04

Use deception to move the defender before attacking the space.

05

Change speed and direction to create separation.

06

Protect the ball after gaining the advantage.

07

Finish the duel with a useful pass, shot, cross or carry.
