THE BASIC IDEA
What Is Space?
In football, space is an area of the pitch that a player can use without immediately being pressured by an opponent.
The more space you have, the more time you usually have to control the ball, look up, pass, dribble or shoot.
EXAMPLE 1
Move The Defender To Create Space
Imagine a striker is being closely marked by a centre back. If the striker simply stands still, the defender can remain in a comfortable position.
Instead, the striker can move away from the area a teammate wants to attack.
The striker moves left. If the defender follows, space opens behind the defender for the number 10 to attack.
WHY IT WORKS
Defenders Have To Make Decisions
Good attacking movement forces defenders to choose between two bad options.
The Defender Follows
The defender tracks the runner and leaves space somewhere else for another attacker.
The Defender Stays
The attacker may become free and receive the ball away from pressure.
This is one of the foundations of attacking football: use movement to create a problem that the defender has to solve.
INDIVIDUAL MOVEMENT
Creating Space For Yourself
Players can also manipulate defenders before receiving the ball.
One simple method is to move in one direction before quickly changing direction to receive.
Move Away
Move a few steps away from the space where you actually want the ball.
Move The Defender
Encourage the defender to follow your first movement.
Change Direction
Accelerate back into the space that has just opened.
Receive
Receive the ball with separation from the defender.
TEAM SPACE
Width Creates Gaps
When attackers stand too close together, defenders can protect several players at the same time.
By positioning players across the width of the pitch, the attacking team forces the defense to spread out.
Attackers are close together, allowing defenders to stay compact.
Wide attackers stretch the defensive line and increase the gaps between defenders.
TIMING
Space Does Not Stay Open
One of the biggest tactical mistakes is thinking about space as something permanent.
Football is constantly moving. A gap that exists now may disappear one second later.
The goal isn't only to find space. The goal is to recognize it early enough to use it.
This is why scanning before receiving the ball is so important. Good players already know where the space is before the pass reaches them.
COMMON MISTAKES
What Players Get Wrong
Everyone Moves Toward The Ball
This makes the pitch smaller and allows defenders to pressure several players in the same area.
Standing Still After Passing
Movement after a pass can drag defenders away or create a new passing option.
Running Into Occupied Space
Two attackers entering the same area can make both players easier to defend.
Moving Without Looking
Scan first. Your movement should respond to teammates, defenders and available space.
LESSON SUMMARY
Remember These Five Ideas
Space gives players more time and options.
Movement can create space for somebody else.
Move defenders before attacking the space.
Width stretches defenses and creates gaps.
Recognize space early because it disappears quickly.
