TACTICS COURSE

Defending Tactics

Defending is more than tackling. Learn how teams control space, protect dangerous areas, pressure the ball and work together to stop attacks.

DEFENSIVE PRINCIPLES

Defending Is About Controlling Space

Winning the ball is the final objective of defending, but defenders cannot simply chase the ball everywhere.

Good defending begins by controlling the spaces the opposition wants to attack.

Teams protect dangerous areas, remain connected, pressure the ball at the right moments and support the defender closest to the ball.

KEY IDEA Good defending is not just stopping the player with the ball. It is controlling the options around that player.

THE FOUNDATION

Five Principles Of Defending

1

Pressure

The nearest defender controls the player with the ball.

2

Cover

A teammate supports behind the pressing defender.

3

Compactness

Keep distances between teammates small enough to protect important spaces.

4

Balance

Protect areas away from the immediate location of the ball.

FIFTH PRINCIPLE Communication connects everything. Defenders must constantly help teammates understand pressure, runners, space and danger.

WHY COMPACTNESS MATTERS

Make The Pitch Smaller

When attacking, teams often try to make the pitch as large as possible.

Defending usually involves doing the opposite.

The defensive team tries to reduce the useful space available to the opposition by staying connected vertically and horizontally.

STRETCHED

Large gaps give attackers space to receive and turn.

COMPACT

Smaller distances make central spaces harder to play through.

DEFENDING COURSE

12 Defending Lessons

Start with defensive structure and individual defending before progressing into pressing, defensive blocks and transition defending.

LEARNING PATH

How The Course Progresses

1

Structure

Learn compactness, pressure, cover and balance.

2

Individual Defending

Learn how to control attackers in direct situations.

3

Team Defending

Understand pressing and defensive blocks.

4

Advanced Defending

Control transitions, box defending and attacker decisions.

ATTACKING VS DEFENDING

The Two Courses Fit Together

The attacking course taught you how teams create space.

The defending course teaches you how teams remove it.

ATTACKING

Create Space

Stretch the opposition and open passing lanes.

DEFENDING

Reduce Space

Stay compact and close dangerous passing lanes.

ATTACKING

Create The Free Player

Manipulate defenders until someone becomes available.

DEFENDING

Remove The Free Player

Shift, cover and communicate so dangerous players remain controlled.
