THE FOUNDATION
What Is Dribbling?
Dribbling is the ability to move with the football while maintaining enough control to react to defenders, space and teammates.
Good dribbling is not simply performing tricks or touching the ball as many times as possible.
The purpose is to move the ball effectively while keeping the ability to change your next action.
WHY IT MATTERS
What Does Good Dribbling Give You?
Keep Possession
Move with the football without losing control when space changes.
Carry Forward
Move possession into space when a forward pass is unavailable.
Beat Pressure
Eliminate a defender and create an advantage for your team.
Attract Defenders
Carrying the ball can force an opponent to leave their position and engage you.
BALL DISTANCE
Your Touch Size Should Change
The football does not need to stay the same distance from your feet at all times.
In tight areas, smaller touches allow you to react quickly.
In open space, larger touches allow you to run faster without taking unnecessary touches.
Smaller Touches
Keep the ball close enough to change direction or protect it quickly.
Larger Touches
Push the ball farther ahead so you can accelerate efficiently.
FOOT SURFACES
Use Different Parts Of The Foot
Effective dribbling requires more than one surface of the foot.
Control & Direction
Useful for moving the ball across your body and making controlled changes of direction.
Speed & Natural Movement
Useful for carrying the ball while running and quickly shifting direction.
Tight Control
Useful for stopping, dragging and repositioning the ball in smaller spaces.
Running With The Ball
Useful when pushing the ball forward into larger spaces at speed.
AWARENESS
Do Not Stare At The Ball
Players need to look at the football, especially during difficult touches.
But constantly staring down makes it harder to see defenders, teammates and open space.
As your control improves, practice taking quick looks up between touches.
Control the ball well enough that you can also see the game.
CHANGE OF SPEED
Dribbling Is Not About Moving Fast All The Time
A defender can adjust when you move at one constant speed.
Slowing down can encourage the defender to move closer.
A sudden acceleration can then exploit the space behind or beside them.
CHANGE OF DIRECTION
Make The Defender Adjust Their Feet
Moving in a straight line makes your path easier to predict.
Changes of direction force defenders to shift their balance and reposition their feet.
The sharper and better timed the change, the harder it becomes for the defender to stay with you.
BOTH FEET
Become Comfortable On Both Sides
You do not need identical ability with both feet.
But you should be comfortable enough with your weaker foot to carry the ball, change direction and escape pressure.
If you can only move confidently toward one side, defenders can begin forcing you in predictable directions.
DECISION-MAKING
When Should You Dribble?
Good dribblers do not dribble simply because they have the ball.
They recognize situations where carrying or attacking with the ball can create an advantage.
Carry Forward
If nobody engages you, move into the available space.
Attack
Take on the defender when beating them can create a meaningful advantage.
Escape
Use dribbling to move away from pressure and protect possession.
Release The Ball
If a teammate has a better option, do not dribble unnecessarily.
TRAINING PROGRESSION
How To Develop Dribbling
Begin by developing control, then gradually make the environment faster and less predictable.
Learn
Develop clean touches and basic ball control.
Move
Practice controlling the ball while moving in different directions.
Add Speed
Increase the pace while maintaining control.
Add Decisions
React to random directions, signals and changing space.
Add Pressure
Introduce defenders and realistic 1v1 situations.
DRIBBLING COURSE
8 Dribbling Guides
Work through the guides in order to build your dribbling from basic control toward realistic pressure and match-speed decisions.
Dribbling Basics
Learn the foundations of moving with the football under control.
Close Control
Learn how to keep the ball close when space becomes tight.
Changing Direction
Learn how to change your path while keeping control of the football.
Changing Speed
Use changes of pace to create space and make defenders react.
Using Both Feet
Become comfortable carrying and manipulating the ball on both sides.
Dribbling Under Pressure
Keep control and make better decisions when defenders are close.
Running With The Ball
Learn how to carry the football efficiently through larger spaces at speed.
Dribbling Training
Put the course together with a progressive dribbling training session.
TRAINING PRINCIPLE
Technique Must Survive Pressure
Cone drills can help develop control and familiarity with the football.
But defenders do not behave like cones.
Once basic technique becomes reliable, dribbling practice should include unpredictable movement, decisions and opponents.
Learn the movement without pressure. Prove the skill against pressure.
COMMON MISTAKES
Dribbling Development Mistakes
Looking Down Constantly
The player controls the ball but cannot see the game around them.
Using One Touch Size
The player uses tiny touches in open space or heavy touches in tight areas.
Only Using The Strong Foot
The player's movement becomes predictable.
Always Moving At One Speed
Defenders can adjust because there is no change of tempo.
Dribbling Without Purpose
The player keeps carrying the ball when a pass would create a better advantage.
Only Training With Cones
The player learns patterns but not how to react to defenders.
DRIBBLING SUMMARY
Remember These Seven Ideas
Keep the ball close in tight areas and use larger touches in open space.
Learn to use the inside, outside, sole and laces of the foot.
Look up between touches so you can see defenders, teammates and space.
Use changes of speed and direction to make defenders adjust.
Become useful with both feet and in both directions.
Dribble when it creates an advantage, not simply because you have the ball.
Progress from technique to speed, decisions and live pressure.
